Minutes of the First General Meeting of DRWGI held on August 26, 2006 at Macot Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram

The DRWGI was formally inaugurated by Dr K Mohandas, Director, SCTIMST, Trivandrum in a befitting function held at Mascot Hotel Thiruvananthapuram on August 26, 2006. A Workshop on Digital Radiography was also held in connection with the function. 8 invited lectures were delivered over 2 Technical Sessions in the Workshop chaired by Sri C B Kartha, VSSC and Dr. P R Vaidya, BARC. The participation and the interactions during and after the Workshop were very good. Sri. S I Sanklecha, President, ISNT was present in the 2nd Technical Session. The programme was attended by about 70 ISNT members.

The inaugural meeting of DRWGI was held at 16.00 Hrs. in the same venue after the workshop. The meeting was steered by Sri. B C Bhaumik, Chairman DRWGI and President ISNT, Sri. S. I. Sanklecha, addressed the members. Sri. R.J. Pardikar, General Secretary, ISNT and Sri. B.K. Shah, Regional Controller of Examinations, NCB, ISNT, were also present for the inaugural meeting of DRWGI.

Secretary, Dr.V.R.Ravindran, presented the objectives of the formation of DRWG and proposed future activities. Discussion followed based on that and the major decisions taken are the following.

  1. Awareness programme on Digital Radiography:
    1. As a first step, a comprehensive article may be circulated among all the members.
    2. This will be followed by planning and organising one day awareness courses and 3 day Workshops for interested people. The regular courses conducted at IIT Kanpur can also be used for this purpose. (Action: Prof. Prabhat Munshi, B K Shah, Dr. VR Ravindran)
    3. A special issue of NDE Journal to be brought out on Digital Radiography. (Sri. BC Bhaumik, Dr. DK Bhattacharya, Dr. B. Venkatraman, Dr. VRR)
  2. The scope of the DRWGI to be widened to include Digital Image Processing also.
  3. Generation of technical know how on DR systems. (Sri. Manoharan, GE Bangalore)
  4. Formation of Indian Standards on DR to be looked into by the team identified by BIS MTD21. (Sri. BC. Bhaumik, BK Shah, Dr. VRR)
  5. Training material for DR: Prof. Prabhat Munsi, Shri R J Pardikar and Dr P R Vaidya are requested to look into the requirements and to formulate suitable training material for DR. The material can be in CD and has to be made available to various Chapters of ISNT for conducting the training.
  6. Certification in DR: Qualification of DR practices and operator qualification and certification to be looked into. European Standards are available on the matter and harmonization of Indian Standards with these Standards would be desirable. (Prof. Prabhat Munsi, Shri R J. Pardikar and Dr. P R Vaidya, BK Shah)
  7. Shri B K Shah to look into validation/inspection, qualification/risk assessment on DR practices.
  8. Extension of the membership of DRWGI to the medical community working on DR and Image Processing to be deliberated in the NGC of ISNT.
  9. Tutorial and Special Session on DR in NDE National Seminars: The possibility of planning and organizing a programme in NDE 2006, to be looked into by Sri P. Kalyanasundaram.
  10. Decided to organise DRWGI meetings every 6 months, preferably, during the alternate NGC meetings. The next meeting can be arranged during NDe2006 at Hyderabad.

This has got the concurrence of Sri B C Bhaumik, Chairman, DRWGI.
